UK Police kill a dog despite 30,000 signing petitions to save his life

TOP NEWS

Named ‘Francis the Pitbull Terrier’, the dog was found in a park without an owner or a microchip last week, and unfortunately for him the law states he must be killed.

More than 30,00 animal lovers signed an online petition to reverse the decision to end Francis’ life, but to no avail.

Staff at Battersea Dogs Home, who have had to euthanise 91 dogs in the last year, are currently caring for Francis in his last days, reported the Metro.

Although his caretakers are in love with the cheerful character, they were not able to exempt him from his fate as the law doesn’t allow a banned-breed dog to be registered in a charity’s name.

Under the Act it would be a criminal offence for Battersea to sell, exchange or give such a dog to any other organisation or individual and the dog would be seized by the Police, who could then prosecute the charity. Exempting such a dog from the Act is not an option for Battersea as the law doesn’t allow such a dog to be registered in a charity’s name.

Battersea had to put to sleep 91 dogs last year who were identified by the police as banned breeds. Until the law is changed, so that a dog is not judged by its breed but by what it has actually done, dogs like Francis and many more in the future, will have to be put to sleep.

Bosses said that if the home do not put dogs of the four banned breeds (Pitbulls, Japanese Tosas, Fila Brazilieros and Dogo Argentinos) to sleep, the dog would be seized by the police, who could then prosecute the charity.

The staff asked people to help them ‘change the law’ by contacting their MP and putting pressure on them.

They said: ‘Until the law is changed, so that a dog is not judged by its breed but by what it has actually done, dogs like Francis and many more in the future, will have to be put to sleep.
